IRAs

An individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a type of savings to give consumers a tax-advantage incentive to save for retirement and education. With the passage of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, there are now three types of IRA’s available to consumers. The three types of IRA’s are the Traditional IRA, the Roth IRA and the Education IRA. Each has unique characteristics and specific eligibility requirements. All three are available at Dakota Plains Federal Credit Union.

A brief description of each IRA type is outlined below:

  • Traditional IRA
These accounts are still available to anyone under the age of 70 who has income from compensation. The maximum contribution for 2009 is $5000 per year and $6000 per year if over the age of 50. Penalty free withdrawals continue to be available for IRA owners who reach the age 59 1/2, become disabled or have qualifying medical expenses.
  • Roth IRA
This new IRA does not allow contributions to be tax deductible. However, withdrawals from a Roth IRA may be tax-free. Withdrawals from a Roth IRA are tax and penalty free as long as the account has been open for at least five years and you are either over the age of 59 1/2, disabled or buying a first home.
  • Education IRA
Starting January 1, 1998, parents and other interested persons may be able to establish an Educational IRA for a child under the age of 18. Contributions to the account will not be tax deductible, but the earnings will be tax-free if used for qualified higher education expenses. Contributions cannot exceed $2,000.00 per child per year. If parents, grandparents and others have set up an account for the same child, their contributions cannot exceed $2,000.00 per child per year. Careful tracking is important to avoid possible penalties.
